Use AI coding tools to explore and build a small product while keeping scope, acceptance, engineering review, and ownership with people.
AI can help turn a brief into a prototype quickly. Speed does not tell a founder whether the product solves a real problem or whether its code can be changed, tested, and operated safely.
Brownsmith uses assistants and coding agents collaboratively: define a bounded task, give useful context, inspect what changed, and test the result outside the chat. This guide helps you make those decisions without pretending to be the engineer.
You will write an AI work brief and review protocol that a human builder can use as well.
Use this guide’s decisions and templates with your team or the developer, agency, or coding agent doing the work. Keep the scope clear and agree what evidence you will use to review the result.
Non-technical founders working with consultants, developers, agencies, freelancers, or AI coding agents.
No engineering experience is required. Bring a product idea, proposal, or existing software decision to examine.
Put the guide to work
Give an agent a bounded task, a testable acceptance rule, and an explicit point where a person checks its work. Define what an AI tool may produce, what it must not decide, and how a founder checks the output.
Illustrative product or service: An AI assisted intake tool that turns customer emails into draft tasks
Use the same fictional request-tracker project through planning, building, testing and deployment. Each stage gives you an artifact to carry into the next.
The bd-guide-skillsfolder turns this path into a reusable skill. Open its SKILL.md, follow your assistant's skill-loading instructions, and ask it to guide your own small app through the four stages. Read the scope and permissions before use.
Next.js optimisation — Review version-specific rendering, accessibility and performance if your project uses Next.js.
Continue the decision path
Brief a builder or coding agent, review the hidden system as well as the interface, and accept the result with repeatable tests.
